What is GPA Training?
GPA Training (Gentle Persuasive Approaches) is a mandatory, evidence-based education program required for Personal Support Workers (PSWs) working in long-term care, retirement homes, hospitals, and community care settings across Ontario.
This training focuses on understanding responsive behaviours in seniors—particularly those living with dementia, cognitive impairment, mental health conditions, or complex care needs—and teaches PSWs how to respond safely, respectfully, and professionally.
At Elite Royal International Career College (ERICC), GPA Training is integrated into our PSW program to ensure students are workplace-ready and compliant with employer and placement expectations.
Why GPA Training Matters for PSWs
Employers and placement sites expect PSWs to:
● Understand the root causes of responsive behaviours
● Use non-physical, person-centred approaches
● Maintain dignity, respect, and safety for residents
● Reduce risk of injury to residents and staff
● Follow Ministry and long-term care compliance standards
Completing GPA Training improves employability and prepares students for real-world caregiving environments.

What Students Will Learn
Through GPA Training, PSW students will learn how to:
● Recognize and interpret responsive behaviours
● Understand the impact of dementia, delirium, and mental health on behaviour
● Apply person-centred care principles
● Use de-escalation and communication techniques
● Ensure safety for themselves, residents, and coworkers
● Respond appropriately in challenging care situations
Training emphasizes empathy, observation, critical thinking, and respectful care.
